At the department conference on March 6th, all teachers received a copy of Jim Burke’s Writing Reminders. After you read the introduction, leave a comment with your thoughts!

The introduction was a little sappy but Burke made some points that are familiar to me, in terms of finding the time to write with our students and to teach them how to write…they are two different things, after all. The title of the introduction is definitely head-on: “The Challenge of Teaching Writing. I do agree with Burke that students are more engaged when they do writing in class, based on my own anecdotal evidence. Before vacation, I did a guided freewrite with my E2 classes and almost every student handed in a piece of writing, even the ones that never do anything! Amazing.
